TWPF Mission Statement
Founded in 1967 during the Black Arts Movement, the Third World Press Foundation advances literacy and learning through publishing, educational programming, and community engagement. Rooted in African American and African Diaspora traditions, our mission is to make high-quality literature and cultural knowledge widely accessible. We fulfill this mission by producing books, hosting cultural and author events, sustaining our more than fifty-year Prison Literacy Program, and gifting books to schools, libraries, and youth organizations. By connecting history, culture, and education, we empower communities to preserve their stories and imagine new possibilities.
TWPF Vision Statement
We envision Third World Press Foundation as a premier cultural and educational institution where publishing and literacy advocacy come together to transform lives. Building on our historic role in African American literary traditions, we aim to expand inclusive educational programs and community partnerships that cultivate readers of all ages. Our vision is a world where literature and learning dismantle barriers—including those of incarceration, poverty, and marginalization—inspiring social change and nurturing a new generation of informed, empowered, and engaged citizens.
TWPF Guiding Principles
Literacy as LiberationWe believe literacy is a cornerstone of empowerment, critical thinking, and social change. Our initiatives expand access to reading and learning in communities most often denied it.
Education Across Generations
We design literature and educational programming that serve readers of all ages, cultivating intergenerational learning that strengthens families and communities.
Honoring Tradition, Embracing Inclusivity
We remain deeply rooted in African American and African Diaspora literary traditions while expanding to include diverse voices and perspectives that enrich the global conversation.
Community-Centered Engagement
Our work extends beyond publishing to include cultural events, literacy initiatives, and partnerships that nurture community connection and civic responsibility. The Book Gifts program ensures literature reaches schools, libraries, and youth programs where it can inspire the next generation.
Independent Publishing for Social Change
As an independent press, we safeguard the freedom to publish works that challenge dominant narratives, uplift marginalized voices, and inspire a more just and imaginative world.
