Author Bio
Gwendolyn Brooks was born in Topeka, Kansas, June 7, 1917. She was the first Black person to win a Pulitzer Prize (1950 for Annie Allen) along with many other honors and awards, including Poet Laureate of Illinois (30+ years) and Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. Ms. Brooks published more than 20 works including several books of poetry for adults and children, one novel, writing manuals, and two volumes of an autobiography. She taught at several colleges and universities and created countless awards to inspire and support writers, young and old. Many schools, libraries and other institutions have been named in her honor.
