Third World Press Publishes Black! Feminist! Free! Selected Writings, Interviews, and Speeches by Dr. Beverly Guy-Sheftall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chicago, IL—September 2025Third World Press proudly announces the release of Black!Feminist!Free! Selected Writings, Interviews, and Speeches by Dr. Beverly Guy-Sheftall, a groundbreaking collection that spans more than four decades of scholarship, activism, and public engagement by one of the foremost voices in Black feminist thought.

Dr. Guy-Sheftall has been at the forefront of U.S. Black feminist scholarship and organizing since the 1970s. As the founding director of the Women’s Research and Resource Center at Spelman College and co-founder of the National Black Women’s Health Project, her work has consistently challenged the marginalization of Black women’s voices in both mainstream feminism and civil rights discourse.

Black!Feminist!Free! gathers her most influential essays, public speeches, and interviews into a single volume, offering readers access to the depth and range of her contributions. From early reflections on the intersections of race, gender, and class, to her contemporary analyses of sexuality, reproductive justice, and global Black feminist solidarity, the collection testifies to her enduring commitment to liberation for all oppressed peoples.

In these writings, Guy-Sheftall brings a sharp intellect and unapologetic clarity to issues that remain urgent today: the silencing of Black women in political movements, the cultural policing of Black female sexuality, the failures of U.S. policy to address systemic violence, and the transformative potential of intersectional coalitions. Her voice is both scholarly and insurgent, illuminating the possibilities of a feminism rooted in Black women’s experiences.

As she writes in one of her addresses: “We have always known that the freedom of Black women is inextricably tied to the freedom of all people. Our task has been, and continues to be, to make that truth visible and undeniable.”

This volume underscores Guy-Sheftall’s role as a leading architect of Black feminist intellectual traditions and movements for justice. With the publication of Black!Feminist!Free!, Third World Press affirms its commitment to preserving and amplifying the voices that have reshaped U.S. and global understandings of race, gender, and power.

The book is available online at Third World Press Foundation and at select booksellers.
